Bleeding Stories is an art book printed by hand using screen printing. It is based on stories and anecdotes of Latin American women in Berlin about menstruation. The book aims to collect experiences of different people through a representation full of textures and pigments. The book brings together stories and drawings created in six workshops. This work tries to develop a narrative on the subject that addresses the physical experience of the people who live it. On the other hand, the experiences as a menstruating person in Latin America and the experiences of migration to Germany play an important role in the narrative of the book.

With the objective of creating a space to talk in depth about menstruation from personal experience and in this way contribute to the generation of new discourses and information on the topic, I started the project Bleeding Stories. The idea was to have conversations in small groups with people who wanted to share their experiences and ideas about menstruation.

The first meeting took place in November 2019 with three friends and had the focus on sharing experiences in conversation. The conversation was very pleasant, each freely sharing her anecdotes and we laughed a lot about funny things that had happened to one or the other. There was an innate understanding, a “yes, I know what you mean.” At the end of this dialogue, I gave the participants a drawing of a uterus to paint and as they painted, they conversed more and more fluently. When the workshop was over and we did a little feedback, they told me that the painting was one of the most enjoyable parts of the meeting. It was very enjoyable and I felt that the girls left the workshop feeling stronger.

Between November 2019 and August 2020, I conducted a total of six workshops with different groups of Latin American women in Berlin, which included a total of twenty-one participants. During these meetings, which lasted between two and five hours each, a lot of knowledge was generated and shared. As Leonor Taboada, promoter of self-help, says, the generation of knowledge from the exchange of experiences among women has great potential. The author affirms that the weapon with which we can defend ourselves against oppression is knowledge, and since our own body is the first thing that has been withheld from us, it is the knowledge of it that empowers us.
