IRREMEDIABLE MAR

INEVITABLE SEA

Women in Peruvian history

Irremediable mar is an artistic project that seeks to highlight female characters who have played an important role in Peruvian history, from different fields of knowledge such as music, poetry, politics, science, among others. The project wants to contribute to rescue and reflect an invisible role in our patriarchal society. Among the women represented are: Clorinda Mattos, Barbara D’Achille, Blanca Varela, Francisca Pizarro, María Jesús Alvarado and Maria Parado de Bellido.

This project was born as a critique of the way the history of my country has been written, told and interpreted. In the narration of history, the role of women has been made invisible, and reduced to being wives, lovers, daughters or sisters of a man. Their identity is not based on themselves, but is represented in relation to a male character.

Irremediable mar takes its name from the poem of the same name by writer Maria Jesús Alvarado. The poem talks about the immeasurability and power of the sea, its greatness but also its warmth. With this project I proposed to represent the history of Peru through the biography of different women in different contexts, who built the country of today. The stories of these women are marked by strength and warmth.

This work addresses the need to rethink history and ask ourselves how it was constructed, what role women have played in society and how this role has evolved. The research and elaboration of these individual pieces are an approach to both the history of women and the history of Peru.
