Since the beginning of times, humans have sought to shelter themselves from the dangers that animals, other humans, and the weather posed to them. The house, is the contemporary physical space that provides protection and privacy; its walls separate us from the dangers of the outside. In a dangerous city like Lima, the notion that the house acts as a barrier that protects the people inside from the outside is emphasized by fact that houses are commonly reinforced with bars and have security guards in one form or another. Nonetheless, we face statistic reports that claim that most cases of gender violence and femicides happen within the intimate and familiar space that is meant to protect us: the house. Thus, it turns from a supposed “safe haven” into the most dangerous of places for thousands of women who are attacked in the privacy of their homes.

This artistic project is about domestic violence. It presents the home as the scenery of physical, sexual and psychological violence, and even death. The pieces reflects upon the roles that the concepts of home, family and house play in relation to gender violence. It attempts to help the public comprehend the magnitude of violence and understand that it structurally transverses society as whole.
This project appropriates retablo art to compose a space that is both bi-dimensional and three-dimensional, and play with that ambivalence. The retablo has a clearly demarcated inside and outside, echoing that of a house and its respective notions of private and public spheres. The retablo allows us to enter the intimacy of the domestic violence and portray different stories depicting violence against women.
